Field Trip To Mars

The following work was screened at Outpost Artist Resources in the Electronic Round Robbin on March 22. As the camera is an extension of the eye, the pantheon of media is an extension of the collective unconcious. Field Trip to Mars is a meditation on our collective internal narrative as we tell it to ourselves through media. Field Trip to Mars is a performative piece, one in a series that meditates on threads of the collective narrative, of the story that we tell ourselves, such as progress, transcendance, technological determination, and death. By tuning into the marine air traffic control around governor's island, we activate a series of programatic chain reactions that generate an audio composition and tap into google Mars to take us on a field trip. There are many things to be said about google mapping the unknown universe and spying on our smart phones, about the performance tapping into raido signals that control the air traffic in a demilitarized zone (Governor's Island is a demilitarized zone). The piece is recorded and re-recorded live in an effort to give an up-to-date media experience, with this particular meditation focusing on escape from Earth, control of the air, and control of visual information of the unknown.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Shot by Maria Baburova I processed the video but the beautiful sound artifacts come from android compression
