A fallen over Safety Cone with BDSM play things inside (don’t forget your safety word). Or is it a lighthouse? I forgot the light, and had to replace it with a disco ball.

A sculpture I made at Burning Man in 2022. The Illusion of Safety was a traffic cone tipped on its side that was made out of a geotemp piece and all of the camp's remaining ratchet straps.

This engineering marvel of construction-chic macrame was thought through with me by my amazing collaborators John Foster and John Amato. Super special props go to John Amato for figuring out the top most ratchet angles on this thing, and climbing up there with such aptitude and grace.

The construction-chic macrame had BDSM undertones so of course we put a sexy lounge in there, complete with props and toys subtly woven into the safety net.

The lighting at night was achieved with safety lights hacked by Jacob Joaquin for an earlier geotemp project. They are quite dim and therefore leave the interior unilluminated for anyone inside, while signaling cars and bikers to avoid it on the outside. So visitors can have privacy under the cover of darkness, but still be exposed to the night sky and have lines of sight onto the playa in all directions. Those on the inside can observe what goes on on the outside, and sit directly on the playa surface without being seen.

For the last two nights of the burn LED road flares were used which are brighter for the more festive and active occasion, they share a form factor with the camp's blinky that year.

The Illusion of Safety (word) lounge was occupied nightly but for the privacy of the people in it, no pictures were taken.

Huge Thanks to Miss Daddy, Mamsir, Andrew Macfarlane, Jacob Joaquin, and Max Henstell for helping me construct the piece and John Amato and John Foster for thinking through the more difficult angles and balancing. That was a true artistic collaboration the likes of which I could never have even dreamed of <3

The music for this video comes from https://hypeddit.com/track/33aslk discovered via TJ McAu from whom I usually discover all the best music.

Inside the cone were a series of exit signs, which could be also found throughout the camp. Of course there are no walls and all directions are an exit to one who wishes to move on. They were made with cut up emergency exit signs and glow in the dark vinyl that was slated for the laser, but didn’t hold quite enough glow to be useful for that.
