  • Sense Offering

A 108 minute chant based light, sound, and haptics, composition going through the 37 mandala offerings—mixing it up! But this time in noise, robotic voices and reprocessed chants, going from the imporovised and unscripted voices of women to the chants of buddhist monks, to the khomus moving from West to East, from organic to order, from plurality to individuality, and back again.

The structure was designed and orchestrated by Anthony Fieldman and is called Apotheneum the lighting software is called Chromatik and the composition would not have come together without the very very generous help of it’s developer Mark Slee. more…

  • Women's Labor

A feminist activist initiative, Women’s Labor repurposes domestic tools to become new musical instruments. Using embedded technologies, these domestic-tools-turned instruments are explored in interactive installations, commissioned compositions, and performances. Traditionally relegated to the private sphere, we interrogate domesticity through public engagement and performative spectacle. more…

  • Messages from Off-World

“Still here, 100 years on. Still material, still creative, still caring for each other.” — Liz, 2126

Messages from Space is an immersive installation where cosmic rays (real, high-energy particles from deep space) activate sculptural instruments, responding to each impact with light, sound, and a science fiction narrative. Participants receive the transmissions over FM radio on vintage radios, completing a time travel loop: 1985 hardware tuned to voices from 2126.

Messages from Off-World is a virtual reality installation of the same project that was nonetheless installed in a physical space that could be experienced by groups of people at a time with no additional hardware via a gesture tracking system. More…

  • Womxn who Make Spiritual Machines

    Music/ Music(ology)

This dissertation "womxn who make spiritual machines" is the culmination of 7 years of work as a graduate student at the music department of GSAS.

The term womxn is one of self-identification by the artists including the virtual womxn Kiki Yago who is composed of at least three humans behind the screen. The spiritual machines refer to technological assemblages ranging from hand-soldered electronic instruments re-imagninging the musical instruments of traditional folk and ritual performance practice, to studio workflows entangled with a meditative practice

This dissertation includes both a praxis-based approach to the subject as well as a theoretical one. Which is why the presented version came bound as two books. As a media practitioner, and a person who grew up (amognst other places) in the book binding district of Paris, I was inspired to make expanded book-objects, they are an embodyment of the thoughts contained on their pages, full of networked materials that can be experienced at the same time as the printed text and images (because who reads anything these days without their smartphones by their sides?) and a reflection of present day printmaking capabilities. more

  • OtherWorldly Transformations

    Insect Flights & Otherworldy Transformations

is a 3D sound sculpture that is also a giant theremin. The sculpture is mostly an antenna, with the processing unit being contained in a small replica of the overall piece nestled in the center of it like a lamp. This theremin therefore also a light hanging in the center of the sculpture itself mirroring the shape of the structure that contains it.

As a light, it attracts humans and bugs. It can be played, reflecting human electromagnetic energies in quiet high pitched tones reflecting the insect world. Its many faceted dome, reflecting the facets of their eyes.

During the opening week at the Kochin Biennale the artist played selected pieces in the sculpture to create a sound sphere environment for visitors on the inside, further contextualizing and activating the sound sphere.
